IELTS & CELPIP

IELTS & CELPIP

Proficiency in the English Language is a requirement for a Permanent Residency application. The Government of Canada acknowledges both the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) and a candidate can choose from either of the two mentioned. There are different levels required depending on which pathway or program a candidate would apply for. Let’s take a further look into each test:

IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a test developed by the world’s leading experts in language assessment on four key English language skills listening, reading, writing and speaking (“IELTS Test Centre”, 2020). The test is offered in two formats: Paper based and computer delivered; test takers can choose the format they prefer the most.

  • General Training module should be taken
  • Academic module is not accepted for Express Entry

Test results are valid for 2 years and should still be valid when an applicant completes their Express Entry profile and/or apply for permanent residence. Each band score achieved by the applicant has corresponding points that will be part of the computation which is the basis for being invited to apply for residency.

CELPIP

The CELPIP Tests are Canada’s leading general English tests for immigration, citizenship, and professional designation. The CELPIP Test allows test takers to demonstrate their ability to function in English. The test clearly, accurately, and precisely assesses a test taker’s English abilities in a variety of everyday situations, such as communicating with co-workers and superiors in the workplace, interacting with friends, understanding newscasts, and interpreting and responding to written materials.

  • One test format only: Computer delivered
  • The CELPIP – General evaluates test taker’s English listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills and is officially designated for permanent residence applications by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), and is also accepted for professional designations.
  • The CELPIP – General LS evaluates test taker’s English listening and speaking skills and is officially designated for citizenship applications by IRCC, and is also accepted for professional designations (“Home – CELPIP”, 2020).

Each band score achieved by the applicant has corresponding points that will be part of the computation which is the basis for being invited to apply for residency.
